Outdoor lighting fails for boring reasons: water finds a gasket, heat cooks a driver, sand scours a lens. We specify for the climate first — sealed to IP66 or IP67, impact rated to IK08, stainless or marine-grade fixings — and design second, because a beautiful scheme that dies in two summers was never a good scheme.
The design itself is mostly about restraint. A garden lit everywhere reads flat; a garden with three or four lit moments and dark between them has depth. We light the route, the trees worth looking at and the boundary, and leave the rest alone.
